Molecular Tooth Decay

چکیده

Charles Darwin was intrigued with vestigial organs and, in fact, made them a part of his ‘‘long argument’’ for the existence of evolution in the natural world in Chapter 13 of On the Origin of Species. Now on the 150 anniversary of the publication of that seminal work, a study linking vestigial organs with molecular biology with paleontology has shown even more clearly how vestigial organs are of critical explanatory power in evolutionary theory. In the current issue of PLoS Genetics, Meredith et al. [1] present a comprehensive study of the Enamelin (ENAM) gene in placental mammals that sheds light on the evolutionary process. What is different about this study from others in the literature using gene sequences in the study of evolution is that ENAM sequences and functionality directly mirror the evolution of teeth in living and extinct placental mammals.

Diversity of Lactobacillus species in primary dental pulp and clinical signs and symptoms

Aims: bacteria are one of the main factors involved in the process of tooth decay.  They play an important role in the onset and progression of tooth decay and are the main cause of pulp and periapical diseases. Inequalities in Tooth Decay in Australian Children by Neighbourhood Characteristics and Indigenous Status.

OBJECTIVE Tooth decay is related to poverty, measured at individual and neighbourhood levels. It is however uncertain if living in an advantaged neighbourhood reduces tooth decay similarly in Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. METHODS This study describes tooth decay by neighbourhood characteristics and Indigenous status, and examines inequalities by Indigenous status. RESUL...

Sense of coherence and four-year caries incidence in Finnish adults.

This study assesses whether sense of coherence (SOC) predicts incidence of tooth decay over 4 years and the role of dental behaviours in explaining the effect of SOC on incidence of tooth decay. Data from 994 adults who participated in both the Health 2000 survey and the Follow-Up Study of Finnish Adults' Oral Health were analysed for this study. At baseline, participants provided information o...

Statistical Models for Dental Caries Data

Tooth decay is ubiquitous among humans and is one of the most prevalent oral diseases. Although this condition is largely preventable, more than half of all adults over the age of eighteen present early signs of the disease, and at some point in life about three out of four adults will develop the disease. Tooth decay is also common among children as young as five and remains the most common ch...
